Guidelines for members and parents

How to become a member

  • Eligible candidates include anyone with a positive attitude who is energetic, driven, and committed with a passion for performing.
  • Dancers must have at least 1 year of prior experience in chosen discipline.
  • Auditions for the company will be held every spring, you will be advised ahead of time.
  • Members must re-audition each year.
  • If an active company member cannot attend auditions due to extenuating circumstances or an interested candidate has missed the auditions, they will be given the opportunity to audition during the week-long summer intensive summer camp upon approval of the REACH company teachers.
  • Students’ tuition fees must be current in order to remain in the company program.
  • REACH summer camp is an intensive week of training which REACH members must attend, no exceptions. This helps prepare dancers for fall lessons and helps maintain their technique and flexibility through the summer ensuring a smooth return to form.

Member Requirements, Rules and Regulations

  • Parents must read and sign a Competitive Dance Policies contract each year.
  • Parents must trust the judgment of the teachers in regard to the level in which their children are placed.
  • The time commitment from company members is higher than regular classes and attendance to all classes is mandatory and essential. If the student misses more than 3 classes (with the exception of medical reasons) they will be expelled from the class for the year. This applies to all technique classes as well as choreography classes (i.e. applies to every class taken at the school). If a member is unable to attend they must phone and inform the school prior to their class. Competitions Can Not Be Missed!
  • All REACH dancers must meet the minimum requirements of dance hours with NO EXCEPTIONS (see class requirements). The company is a privilege and if the teacher feels a student is not fully participating with the right attitude it is up to their discretion to expel that child from the company.
  • Participation may be required in conventions, master classes and workshops.
  • There will be a minimum of 4 dance competitions attended each year. • There will be a REACH "Work in Progress" Showcase each year in February/March. This gives REACH students the opportunity to perform on a real stage prior to their first competition and includes all participating REACH groups, solos & duos.
  • Company jackets are mandatory and will be available for order each year in November.
  • School of Music & Dance dress code must be followed for all classes at the school, with no exceptions. REACH summer dance camp shirts may be worn to class in place of the school tee- shirt.
  • There are extra costs involved with competitive dance such as competition entrance fees or festival fees (typically between $25 and $45) per competition. Competitive dance costumes fees are higher fees than recreational dance costume fees.
  • Practice at home is essential as well as a willingness to work hard. It is recommended that you download a copy of the music for at home practice. Your teacher will be able to give you details on the music chosen.
  • You must arrange to get your child to all competitions. It is a good idea to note the phone #’s of the other parents in your class to arrange carpools when necessary.
  • Students must be at each competition at least 1 hour early in full makeup, hair done and in costume. Students will be expected to stay at the competition until the adjudication and awards have been held. There often can be several hours between competing and adjudication. This is a good opportunity to watch other groups competing.
  • All members of the REACH Student Company are expected to behave in an appropriate manner befitting a company member. We are supportive and encouraging of all company members and to all other performers, whenever, wherever we encounter them. We will always endeavor to be role models of sportsmanship at whatever event we attend.
  • Participation in the REACH showcase and the year-end dance recitals is mandatory. Failure to participate in these events may result in disqualification in joining the REACH company the following teaching year.

  • Must be competing with a group number in the chosen discipline of your solo/duo.
  • Must be available for and arrange payment for approximately 5 hours of choreography lessons usually in the summer and polishing lessons during the regular school year per the teachers request.
  • Must write a letter to the prospective teacher stating why you are a good candidate. This is to be handed in the day of the company auditions.
  • Solos/Duos will be selected by the teachers based on the ability of the student as well as dedication, commitment, attitude, and involvement.
  • It is a special honour to be chosen, but again remember that costs for extra lessons will involve private lesson fees, costume fees and competition fees.
  • Solos and duos can submit music suggestions, however; final decisions on music will be up to the teacher. A copy of the song with the edit will eventually be supplied by the teacher.
  • Students should bring a video device during your choreography sessions to help with their practice. It is a good idea as well to keep a journal of all the corrections.
  • Solos/Duos/Trios will not be in the year end dance showcase or recital. A few solo/duo spots will be awarded to dance in the Friday night showcase.

Parent Responsibilities

  • Parents are expected to respect the decisions made by teachers in regards to placement of students in levels, including both classes and summer camps. All communication should be respectful and courteous.
  • You must ensure that your phone numbers, email addresses and your children’s birthdays are correct at the front desk.
  • All communications (e.g. competition notices, extra classes, conventions etc.) will be emailed and posted on the REACH page of our website. The link will be provided at the beginning of each year.
  • Any communication needing to go to the teacher must be done through the front desk
  • A phone tree will be provided in the fall of each dance season. Car pooling is encouraged and absences due to lack of transportation will be considered inexcusable.
  • Please note that competitions run primarily from March through to the end of May and we strongly suggest that you avoid planning family vacations during this time to avoid any conflicts or absences that may result in your child being asked to leave the group.
  • If a company member is injured or ill they are expected to come and watch their class to avoid falling behind (if illness allows).
  • There will be deadlines for class and summer camp registration. If deadlines are missed students may be required to attend at alternate locations or re-audition.
  • A parent meeting will be held on the first day of REACH camp at each location in the summer. This meeting is mandatory for all new company parents.
